It’s our goal here at Anatomy In Clay® Learning System, to teach students about heart disease in hopes that it will lead to its prevention.

One Fact,

One Disease,

One Community Activity,

One Form of Prevention, and

One Lesson Plan.

Once a day, every day of February.

"The Mind Cannot Forget What The Hands Have Learned.â„¢"

February 27:

Fact: Heart disease can manifest differently in men and women, making it important for both genders to be informed about their individual risks.

Disease: Marfan syndrome

Community Activity: Partnering with healthcare organizations to provide educational materials in waiting rooms or clinics.

Form of Prevention: Incorporate heart-healthy fats, such as those found in nuts, seeds, avocados, and olive oil, into your diet.

Lesson Plan: Embracing Individual Differences: Exploring Marfan Syndrome

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define Marfan syndrome and understand its genetic basis.

  2. Identify the physical characteristics and symptoms associated with Marfan syndrome.

  3. Explore the impact of Marfan syndrome on various systems of the body.

  4. Discuss the diagnosis and treatment options for individuals with Marfan syndrome.

  5. Analyze the importance of support and management strategies in living with Marfan syndrome.

Materials Needed:

  • Measuring tape

  • Tall and short chairs

  • Pictures or illustrations representing Marfan features

  • Informational materials on Marfan syndrome

  • Notecards and pens for note-taking

  • Anatomical models (optional)

Instructional Strategies:

Introduction (10 minutes):

Begin by introducing Marfan syndrome and the genetic inheritance pattern. Discuss the physical features commonly seen in individuals with Marfan syndrome. Engage students by highlighting the diverse manifestations of the condition.

Guided Practice (20 minutes):

  1. Use the measuring tape to demonstrate the typical body proportions seen in individuals with Marfan syndrome.

  2. Arrange students in a line from tallest to shortest as a visual representation of the potential height differences in Marfan syndrome.

  3. Show pictures or illustrations of Marfan features and discuss their implications on different body systems.

  4. (Optional) Utilize anatomical models to explain how Marfan syndrome affects connective tissue and its impact on the body.

Independent Practice (20 minutes):

Divide students into small groups and provide them with case studies or scenarios related to individuals diagnosed with Marfan syndrome. Have each group analyze the case, discuss treatment options, and propose strategies for managing Marfan syndrome. Encourage students to consider the holistic care needed for individuals with Marfan syndrome.

Conclusion (10 minutes):

Summarize the key points learned during the lesson, emphasizing the need for individualized care and support for those with Marfan syndrome. Discuss the importance of early detection and proactive management strategies. Allow students to ask questions and share their reflections on the lesson.

Assessment Methods:

  • Observation of student participation and engagement in hands-on activities

  • Evaluation of group case study analyses and proposed management strategies

  • Written reflections on the impact of Marfan syndrome on individuals' lives

Hands-On Activities:

  • Measuring height differences and body proportions using a measuring tape

  • Arranging students by height to illustrate variations in Marfan syndrome

  • Examination of pictures or illustrations representing Marfan features

  • Collaborative analysis of case studies related to Marfan syndrome in small groups

By incorporating hands-on activities and interactive discussions, students will actively engage with the topic of Marfan syndrome, gaining a deeper understanding of this genetic condition and the importance of personalized care for individuals affected by it.
