It’s our goal here at Anatomy In Clay® Learning System, to teach students about heart disease in hopes that it will lead to its prevention.
One Fact,
One Disease,
One Community Activity,
One Form of Prevention, and
One Lesson Plan.
Once a day, every day of February.
"The Mind Cannot Forget What The Hands Have Learned.â„¢"
February 26:
Fact: Learning CPR and how to use an AED can empower individuals to respond effectively in emergency situations related to heart disease.
Disease: Rheumatic heart disease
Community Activity: Organizing a "wear red" day or campaign to raise visibility for heart disease awareness.
Form of Prevention: Avoid or limit the intake of processed meats, which are high in sodium and saturated fats.
Lesson Plan: Rhythm of Resilience: Understanding Rheumatic Heart Disease
Learning Objectives:
Define Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) and understand its connection to untreated streptococcal infections.
Identify the risk factors and symptoms associated with RHD.
Explore the impact of RHD on heart structure and function.
Discuss prevention strategies and treatment options for managing RHD.
Analyze the importance of awareness and education in preventing RHD.
Materials Needed:
Smartphones with TikTok app installed
Access to the internet for research
Note-taking materials
Educational resources on RHD
Stethoscopes (optional)
Heart models or diagrams (optional)
Instructional Strategies:
Introduction (10 minutes):
Begin by introducing Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) and its prevalence in populations with inadequate access to healthcare. Discuss the connection between RHD and untreated streptococcal infections. Engage students by explaining the impact of RHD on individuals' lives.
Guided Practice (20 minutes):
Assign students to research and create short TikTok videos that explain the causes, symptoms, and complications of RHD.
Encourage students to be creative in presenting the information in a clear and engaging manner while raising awareness about RHD.
(Optional) Demonstrate how to use a stethoscope to listen for heart murmurs that may be present in individuals with RHD.
(Optional) Use heart models or diagrams to show the structural changes in the heart caused by RHD.
Independent Practice (20 minutes):
Students will work independently or in pairs to create their own TikTok videos focusing on different aspects of RHD, such as prevention strategies, treatment options, or personal stories of individuals living with RHD. They will share these videos with the class.
Conclusion (10 minutes):
Summarize the key points learned during the lesson, emphasizing the importance of early detection, treatment, and prevention of RHD. Discuss the significance of education and awareness campaigns in combatting RHD. Allow students to reflect on the impact of their TikTok videos in spreading awareness.
Assessment Methods:
Evaluation of TikTok videos based on accuracy of information, creativity, and engagement
Class participation in sharing and discussing TikTok videos
Written reflections on the role of social media in health education and advocacy for RHD awareness
Hands-On Activities:
Creating and sharing TikTok videos on different aspects of RHD
Optional use of stethoscopes to practice listening for heart murmurs
Optional exploration of heart models or diagrams to visualize heart changes in RHD
By incorporating social media platforms like TikTok into the lesson, students will actively engage with the topic of Rheumatic Heart Disease and have a platform to raise awareness about this important health issue.
